- Democracy- Rule by the people
- Socrates an Athenian philosopher who wanted people to consider the true meaning of qualities such as justice and courage.
- Agora- A public market place.
- After the Greeks defeated the Persians outside of Marathon a warrior was asked to proclaim the news in Athens 26.2 miles away.
- A Macedonian King Phillip II United Greece.
- Map of Alexander the Great conquered territory (page 176).
- Spartans were known as fierce warriors.

Ancient Rome

- Rome was founded upon seven hills that rise above the Tiber River.
- Republic- Citizens who have the right to vote and select their leaders.  The basis of the American government structure is from the Ancient Romans.
- Veto- Refuse to approve.
- ( End of the Republic) Dictatorship- Absolute Ruler
- Emperor Constantine helped spread Christianity throughout the empire.  Constatine allowed freedom of religion after centuries of Christian persecution.
- Time line (page 214)
- The capital of the Roman Empire (Rome) was moved to Constantinople (modern day Istanbul, Turkey) because Rome was not the Center of Trade.
- Hadrian and Augustus were two of the most accomplished emperors in Rome.  Hadrian encouraged learning for adults and children, while Augustus promoted trade, throughout the Empire.
