Fourth Grade Policies and Procedures

This page is to help you better understand what the life of your fourth grader will entail at James R. Wood Elementary School.

Grading: Letter grades are earned in the fourth grade. Most assignments receive the traditional A through F grades. The grading scale is:

93 -100% A

85 - 92% B

76 - 84% C

70 - 75% D

Below 69% F

Fourth grade is the year where the students begin to understand the letter grade system. Any assignment attempted is better than no assignment turned in at all.

Homework: Homework usually consists of work not completed at school. Students may miss recess until incomplete work is finished. An occasional assignment or project may be assigned as homework. The policy for late work is as follows:

1.     Daily assignments - work not turned in is entered as a zero and is averaged with the grade received when turned in. Work over two days late will be required to be turned in, but the highest grade possible will be a minus.

2.     Projects, book reports, and other long-term assignments - the grade drops one whole grade for each late day late. All assignments must be turned in. If the student is absent on the day the assignment is due, the project or book report must be turned in on the first day back or the grade will drop.

***Late work means incomplete work, work forgotten at home but finished, work not finished at school, work forgotten to be turned in, and work completed, but forgotten in student's desk, etc.

Assignment Books: Students will fill out the day's assignments in a daily assignment book. Parents need to sign or initial nightly to show they have checked assignments.

Friday Folders: Every Friday, or the last day of the school week, your child will bring home a Friday Folder. In this folder will be assignments and quizzes that your child has completed during the week. Please review these papers, sign the quizzes or tests that have been stamped with a parent signature stamp.  Also, sign and date the log area that is located on the inner right hand pocket of the folder. The folder and signed papers are to be returned to school with your child on the following Monday. This lets teachers know that you have seen your child's papers and are aware of his/her progress in school.

Progress Reports: Each student will receive a Progress Report at the midterm of the first quarter. Students will then only receive Progress Reports as needed.

Cursive Writing: Neat cursive writing will be expected on assignments. The exception will be in Math and on Spelling Tests, unless instructed otherwise. Please encourage your child to use cursive on assignments.

Quiz - Test Schedule:

*Spelling: Students will take a pretest during the week and a final test on Friday. If the         student gets a 100% on the pretest, he/she does not have to take the final test on Friday. It would be very helpful for your child to review the spelling words periodically during the week, especially on Thursday to help prepare him/her for the quiz on Friday.

*Math: Students will be tested after every five lessons.

*Science and Geography: an assessment (project, report, test, etc.) will be given after each unit of study.

Book Reports: Book Reports will be required periodically throughout the school year. Different formats of book reports will be used. Expectations and directions will be thoroughly discussed with students.

Air Conditioning: Students may need to bring a sweater or sweatshirt to school to wear if they get too cold from sitting in the line of cold air blowing from the vent.

Parent Volunteers: Parent Volunteers may be needed from time to time to assist in activities, projects, math etc. Please sign up if you are able to assist in any way. Parent volunteers might be asked to do such jobs as videotape (copy) educational movies, television programs, etc. We will also need parents for crafts and food preparation.

Parties: Classroom parties for holidays will be arranged and planned by the room parent and approved by the classroom teacher. Birthday party invitations should be mailed to individual houses and not brought to school.

Rewards/Incentives: Rewards and incentives such as candy, free assignment passes, popcorn parties, etc. to acknowledge a job well done, good behavior and such will be used at the teacher's discretion.

Book Orders:  Please send checks to school in a sealed envelope or plastic bag labeled with your child's name. All book orders should be paid by check to the appropriate book club. Please do not send cash.

Scheduling changes:  If your child's routine will be different on any given day, we ask that a written note be sent to school with the day's change of events. The note will be given to the classroom teacher and copied in the office.

Hot Lunch: Hot Lunch accounts are set up for each student. Please be sure to watch for reminder slips when your account is low. If you would like your child to receive "extras" you must notify the office.
